I often find myself endlessly searching for office space inspiration. While creativity and its ability to flow naturally within the confines is of the utmost importance, my need for functionality nearly trumps all desires for pleasing aesthetics. To my surprise, Rachel Zoe's headquarters blends both aspects of my "perfect work environment" vision beautifully. A bureau of designer duds, shoes, handbags, and accessories, Rachel's office houses room for her to create wonderfully timeless pieces while at the same time offering organizational structure which allows her to continuously build upon and expand her one-woman empire from a business aspect. It's rare to come across a creatively structured space (an oxymoron in my book), but when I do, it is oh so sweet.

My most favorite aspect of Rachel Zoe's office is that of her nail polish collection adorned with cocktail rings; a simple yet telling reminder to enjoy the smallest of things in life.

When I first came across this home on The Glitter Guide, I literally sat still, fixated on my computer screen. With its neutral accents and chic eclectic finds, most of the pieces on display are collections and knick-knacks that the owner, Krystal of This Time Tomorrow, has accumulated over the years. My favorite part of the house is her electric blue cruiser in the kitchen eating area. What a beautifully dashing space.

Churro Snack Mix Recipe - Gluten Free

*To answer a few email questions: The pattern above is actually a wallpaper sample I have from Phillip Jeffries Ltd. This is their Moroccan print in chocolate brown (found here).

I debated posting this allergy friendly cinnamon sugar "churro" Chex Mix recipe merely because its components are less than camera friendly. However, this recipe is so quick (5 minutes), simple (5 ingredients), and delicious (cinnamon sugar yumminess) that I had to share, regardless of its photographic appeal. Instead of using butter, as most traditional Chex Mix dessert recipes require, I swapped a third cup of coconut oil and it worked like a charm. Put these in a jar and grab a handful throughout the day, or pack in a clear bag tied with a bow and send to a friend in the mail; this is the perfect snack to eat anytime, anywhere.

"Churro" Chex Mix - gluten free, dairy free
- 5 C. Chex Mix rice cereal (or any plain cereal)
- 1/3 C. coconut oil, melted (or butter)
- 1 Tbs. brown sugar
- 1/2 Tbs. of cinnamon sugar (recipe below), plus more for dusting
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

- wax paper

Cinnamon Sugar
- 1/2 C. sugar
- 1 Tbs. cinnamon
Mix sugar and cinnamon. Store in an airtight container. (This makes way more than the recipe calls for. In total I used about 1.5 Tbs. of this and put the rest in a container)

In a large, microwavable safe bowl, add cereal. Set aside.
In a small, microwavable safe bowl, add coconut oil and microwave for 30 seconds, or until melted. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon sugar mix, and vanilla.
Pour sugar mixture over cereal in the large bowl and toss gently until coated evenly.
Microwave cereal mixture in 1 minute intervals for 5 minutes, carefully stirring after each minute.
Spread cereal mixture over wax paper. Sprinkle with additional cinnamon sugar to taste (I suggest doing this slowly because it can quickly become too sweet). Let cool, about 30 minutes.
Store in an airtight container up to 1 week.

5 Beauty DIYs: Magnetic Makeup Boards & Brush Holders

If there's one thing that needs a bit tidying up in my life, it's that of my makeup drawer. I am compulsive about cleaning and organizing throughout our home, cars, etc., but the one place that simply falls through the cracks is that little tiny drawer to the right of my bathroom sink. Being an avid mineral makeup wearer, I've grown accustomed to having a cloth or towel nearby to wipe everything down afterward, but I'm still afraid to put the containers inside anything but a plastic bag out of fear they'll quickly ruin the material of a makeup bag. And since I don't have a catch-all bag, I try to (as neatly as possible) lay my brushes and miscellaneous pieces down flat in the drawer, but their organized stance lasts just until the next time I open it, when everything becomes scattered once more. All of this frustration led me to a quick search for DIY makeup holders, which surprisingly turned up awesome results. Here are a few organized solutions I'm loving:

January Photo a Day

I remember once being moved after reading a story of a man who had snapped a Polaroid photo every day during the latter half of his life. Whether he captured a pair of his socks or a family member's smile, the significance was nestled in the fact that these were pieces, not necessarily moments, which made his life, well, his. Inspired by this simple act of documentary, I've attempted to do the same in minuscule proportion by taking a photo of one thing in my life each day over the course of one year, but I have failed to do so in sequential order, and subsequently started and stopped this project many times. Luckily, I seem to be one of many who would like to achieve such a goal, as my friend Parmie reached out in late December and asked if I'd like to participate in "January Photo a Day" where you snap a photo of something in your life that correlates with the prompted list of subjects for the entire month. I was ecstatic to start this project once more, and thought I'd share a recap of the photos each Saturday on here during the month of January. If you are participating, please let me know! I'd love to see your photos as well.

Quiet Spaces

The post-holiday lull that appears in the form of barren, stark January days is always a hard (yet somewhat welcomed) adjustment for me. Gone are the animated greens, statically cheerful figurines, and glowing spirited lights, and in their place stand the familiar decorations of old, all of which take no time settling in for the eleven months ahead until their Yuletide counterparts take over once more. Transitional embellishments to ease the abrupt contrast would be a novel idea, but the last thing our closets need are more themed decor. With that said, I surprisingly fell quite hard for this simple, nearly monochromatic, home. Antique charm mixed with eclectically modern pieces create beautifully quiet spaces; a much needed dose of inspiration this time of year indeed.

Warner Bros. Joyful Noise + My Story

Joyful Noise, the new Warner Bros. movie starring Oscar nominees Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah, is an inspirational film filled with laughter, joy, music, hope, love, and renewal.

After the death of the town's choir director, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), a single hardworking mother of two, is given the position, only to come face to face with G.G. Sparrow (Parton) a fiery, tried-and-true gal who wants to give the choir direction in the way she sees fit.

Their bumpy journey to win the National Joyful Noise Competition leads them on a path filled with many of life's rawest emotions, but if they can overcome their differences and find a common voice, Vi Rose, G.G., and the choir may make the most joyful noise of them all.

Joyful Noise is such a powerful film that it made me think of a strong woman in my life: my Mom, who lived her life with a quiet mission to bring hope, love, and kindness to others.

A bright, shining light amongst her family, friends, and church, my Mom maximized her heart's capacity on a daily basis by lending a helping hand to anyone in need, whether it be through children's and adult ministries, volunteering at organizations like Juvenile Diabetes Research, sending monthly care packages to our soldiers overseas, building homes in Mexico for the less fortunate, or cleaning the church's auditorium, bathrooms and classrooms, no task was too big or too small for her to give it all that she had.

Since her passing in 2007, not a day goes by that I don't come across an example of how my Mom's open heart and helping hands made an impact in someone's life, most specifically my own and the ways she motivated me to go above and beyond what is just expected.

In 2010, my Dad and Uncle traveled to Mexico to build a church in my Mom's honor, in hopes that her tenacious work ethic, unwavering faith, compassion for others, and loving spirit will continue to inspire.

Women like my Mom serve as a daily reminder to leave our pride at the door and offer the most simple yet powerful tool we were given: our hearts.

I hope that you will join me in seeing Joyful Noise and take a moment to reflect on how we can all be more inspiring women to our family, friends, communities, and most importantly, each other.

Happy 2012 + Pretty Little Liars Premiere

Happy 2012! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season filled with lots of love from family and friends. As I awoke this morning, I couldn't help but notice how refreshed and renewed I felt. I've spent the last week baking and cooking tons of gluten free, dairy free recipes that I've wanted to try for a while. Donuts, cookies, pizza, roasts, appetizers- you name it, I made it, and it was fabulous. However, our tummies are a bit full and I think the next few weeks shall be filled with soups and lighter meals of the sort.

Jumping quite a bit to another (but equally as exciting for me) subject: Pretty Little Liars premieres tonight at 8/7c on ABC Family. I'm ecstatic. I love this show. I believe I read that we will be finding out who 'A' is this season- any guesses? When I visited the Pretty Little Liars set last month, the set designers gave us a tour of all the girls' rooms which are located on the same sound stage. Each space was decorated to perfectly represent the character, and I loved seeing all of the bed linens, pillows, and decor accessories in each. Here are a few of my favorite design elements from their rooms:

Pay It Forward

Around this time last year I posted a "pay if forward" list of ideas that I had hoped to achieve during 2011. Looking back, I can both happily and regrettably say that I finished nearly half of the deeds on my list. While I do not think a kind gesture should be pre-calculated, tallied, or kept in a memory bank, I do like to jot down ideas to keep my mind and heart in the right place during a season filled with so many distractions. I am going to repost my same list, because quite honestly I think I should follow such guidelines more often.

My 'Pay It Forward' List:

Hand write and mail a note 'just because' to a friend or relative.
Bring a meal to a neighbor or friend when they are sick.
Spend an hour playing games with the residents at our local convalescent hospital.
Pay for the person behind me in a fast food line.
Mow my neighbor's lawn or pull weeds out of their planters.
Bring a pile of old magazines to my doctor's office for her waiting room.
Take unused clothing and household items to a shelter or Goodwill.
Tape the exact change for a soda or snack to a vending machine.
Leave a couple pieces of candy on a coworkers desk with a note.
Pay for the person behind me at a toll booth.
Call a family member or friend on the day of a test or other important event and tell them I'm thinking of them. (I want to push myself to go beyond my comfort zone and actually call them. No text messages, IM's, Facebook comments, etc)
Offer to babysit for our friends who have kids so they can enjoy a night out.
Draw colorful pictures and bring them to St. Joseph's or LA Children's hospital for patients' windows.
Leave behind my magazine or book on a plane.
Make an extra sandwich and snack bag for a homeless person I see often.
Start off by telling a customer service agent "I know this problem is not your fault." I often blame them, which is completely unfair and not right.
Return an extra shopping cart to the front of the store.
Write a note with an encouraging thought and put it in someone's lunch bag or coat pocket.
If nothing else, simply open the door for someone and leave them with a smile.

Nothing can beat a light, airy house with touches of old charm. The white hardwood floors, cozy fireplaces, intricate molding, and simple design esthetic all make for one wonderfully alluring and charismatic space. Hosting a Holiday Craft Party

I love the idea of hosting a holiday craft party for your family and friends like this one featured on Style Me Pretty. Gather some old books and make a trip to the craft store for styrofoam wreaths, balls, and trees, fake moss, and lots of extra hot glue gun sticks, and your party is ready to begin. I think it would be fun to put some extra holiday labels on each table in case guests choose to give their crafts as gifts to neighbors or friends.

How to Throw a Holiday Party

Throwing a holiday party can be stressful and overwhelming to say the least, but entertaining your family and friends this time of year can end up being the brightest memory of the season. Whether you envision a grand event or intimate affair, these are my tips to help guide you through the entire party planning process.

Guests: Tis the season to be with friends and family, but a party too large can lead to disaster. Choose a set number of guests that will fit into your space comfortably, and invite a handful more in anticipation that not everyone will attend. To avoid hurt feelings, keep the list to your closest family and friends only, and consider celebrating with coworkers and acquaintances on a smaller scale, like the office holiday party or a dinner out.

Invites: This aspect of the party planning process is simple and shouldn't break the bank. Sending out Evites for cocktail parties, or even a simple email, will suffice. For a full menu dinner party fancier invites are suitable, but no need to go all out. Invitations cards like these from Rifle Paper Co. are perfect.
- when to send - cocktail party: 1-2 weeks in advance with rsvp up to 3 days prior - dinner party: 3-4 weeks in advance with rsvp up to 2 weeks prior

Food & Drink Too many elements will clutter your party, so choose one thing and do it well.
Cocktail party: If you decide upon a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres party, be sure to say so on your invite so guests don't show up expecting an entire meal. A week prior to your gathering choose a signature cocktail that can be made in batches prior to the party, and offer an assortment of wine, beer, juice, and sodas as well. Determine 3 or 4 hors d'oeuvres that are easy to eat with your hands and don't require a lot of time spent in the kitchen. Shop for your party assuming each attendee will consume 3-4 drinks and roughly 10 hors d'oeuvres pieces.
- suggestions - signature drinks: cranberry martini, candy cane cocktail, maple butter kiss, 103 holiday cocktail recipes - easy appetizers: brie with cherry chutney, fig and olive tapenade, double tomato bruschetta, antipasto pasta salad

Dinner party: If a plated dinner is something you had in mind, planning your menu a week or two in advance will make all the difference. Choose sides that can be made ahead of time so you're not stuck in the kitchen the day of the party. Keep appetizers simple and store bought: nuts, crackers, cheese, fruits, and dips. Pour them into festive dishes to fancy them up.
- suggestions - main course: maple glazed roast turkey, holiday rib roast, apricot brown sugar ham, stuffed winter squash (vegetarian) - make ahead sides: roasted pumpkin apple soup, traditional mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, chilli glazed sweet potatoes

Decor: Keep decor at a minimum, allowing the drinks, food, and company to be the star. Simple table cloths or table runners, glass or mercury votives with unscented tea candles, and fresh greens from your tree or the store will be more than enough to create a holiday party wonderland.

Entertainment: Nothing trumps good conversation and laughter amongst guests, so keep the entertainment factor simple with a mix of your favorite holiday tunes. Create a playlist on your iTunes or log into Pandora for free and find a holiday station to your liking.
- suggestions - Michael Buble holiday, Diana Krall holiday, Nat King Cole holiday

Favors: This step is completely optional, but if you want your guests to leave with a little something in hand, homemade gifts from the kitchen might be the perfect ending to a great evening.

Last night I attended a roller skating party presented by Pastry, the fabulous shoe line created and designed by Angela and Vanessa Simmons (daughters of hip hop legend Rev Run of RunDMC). I was able to talk with Angela and Vanessa before the party started, and I have to say, they were the sweetest girls. Here is our interview:

Three words to describe Pastry:

Angela and Vanessa: Sweet, chic, and unique.

What are you most excited about with the new Pastry line?

V: We're excited to be expanding the brand and offering accessories like iPad cases, bracelets, and tees.

Do you have any beauty secrets for getting ready to walk the red carpet:

A: Confidence!

V: Yes- confidence!

A: Being confident in yourself is the best beauty tip there is.

What brands do you both wear?

V: We wear anything, really. We shop everywhere so there's no particular brand we wear more than others.

A: I like Marc Jacobs -

V: Topshop is a great place to shop at! You don't have to spend a lot to look cute.

Anything fun on your Christmas wish list?

V: I think I'm just looking forward to spending time with family. Since we work so much it's just nice to be with them during the holidays.

Simple Gift Wrapping Idea with Glitter Bow DIY

Wrapping a present for any occasion can be the most tedious part of the entire gifting process, which is why I tend to lean toward simple wrapping techniques to save time, money, and my sanity during the busy holiday season. As a base, I prefer basic kraft paper, allowing the added elements to really stand out. For this gift I chose a left over strand of glitter ribbon, which I cut into two pieces, wrapping each one individually around the gift (creating a cross) and securing in the back with tape. To finish, I placed the bow (DIY below) in the center. From start to finish this took about 5 minutes, a small victory in the game of gift wrapping.

Creating the perfect bow:

1. Start out with an 8-inch piece of ribbon. Loop one end up and over to the center. Secure with double-sided tape. 2. Repeat with opposite end. 3. Place bow on the center of a 3-inch piece of ribbon. Wrap ribbon up and over bow, creating the "knot." Secure with tape. 4. Voila. Use on gifts or anywhere a little pizazz is needed.

A reader wrote me an email recently asking for help in finding a particular paint color, which in turn led me on a surprisingly addictive search through beautiful arrays of wonderful paint color palettes. After sourcing the original color I set out for, I found myself feverishly wading through additional delicious hues and eventually pairing my new found favorites with a few interior photos I had saved on my desktop. I'm especially loving aqua-meets-seafoam green colors in the middle set.

Homemade Cheez-Its - Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free Snacks

The greatest challenge I found after being diagnosed with food allergies was finding snack foods with suitable ingredients. Naturally I began with simple eats, namely fruits, veggies, and a few nuts that I was still able to tolerate. While those are still the safest route for me, every once in a while the need for a salty, gluten-resembling snack arises, which led me to this recipe for gluten free cheezits. With only 7 simple ingredients, these delectable little crackers carry the exact same taste as the name brand, but without the long list of ingredients and allergens. The only thing I would do differently next time is make a bigger batch.

3/4 C. shredded cheese (I shredded a block of 100% sheep's milk from Trader Joes in my food processor. For dairy/casein free, try Daiya mozzarella or cheddar shreds)
3 Tbs. butter, room temperature (I used Earth Balance Dairy Free-Soy Free)
3/4 C. cornstarch
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp xanthan gum
1/2 tsp. baking powder
2 Tbs. milk (I used SoDelicious unflavored coconut milk)
sea salt to taste

- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease pan.
- In a bowl, combine cheese, butter, cornstarch, salt, xanthan gum, and baking powder until mixture is crumbly.
- Add in milk and stir until dough forms. (At this point my milk was not incorporating well, so I tossed the entire mixture into the food processor, pulsed it a few times and the dough came out perfect. Hand held mixer would work great too.)
- Sprinkle a small amount of cornstarch on a flat surface. Roll out dough until 1/8-inch thick. (To save my wood rolling pin, I drape a large piece of plastic wrap over dough before rolling)

- Cut into squares. Poke each square with a toothpick in the center (not necessary- it was just fun)
- Transfer squares to baking sheet. Sprinkle with sea salt.
- Bake for 10 minutes, or until edges are just barely golden.

Pretty Little Liars Fashion Event + Season DVD Giveaway

A few Los Angeles bloggers and myself went to the set of ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars at Warner Bros and were given the opportunity to meet the show's costume designer, Mandi Line. We all gathered on the set used for the show's classroom scenes, where each girl's wardrobe was on display for us to pull out and look at. The clothes were incredible, to say the least. From Marc Jacobs tops to H&M jackets, Betsey Johnson jewelry to leopard booties, each wardrobe contains an array of deliciously selected pieces that Mandi buys from stores around Los Angeles. After talking with Mandi we toured the rest of the sound stage, which holds sets of the girl's bedrooms, bathrooms, and the school hallway. It was such a fun night- thank you to Warner Bros. TV for inviting me to such a cool event. Now I'm even more excited for the new season, which premiere's Monday, Jan. 2 at 8/7c on ABC Family.

Holiday Mantel Ideas

A decorated mantel can be one of the most special places in the home during holidays. From pine cones to stockings, fresh greens to homemade wreaths, whichever accessories you choose to display will surely make your space warmer and brighter. I tend to keep our mantel fairly simple, leaving the tree to be the star, but after seeing these beautifully adorned spaces I'm realizing the mantel can truly be a place to decorate with whatever your heart desires.

A Favorite Pastime

Perusing the isles of upscale grocery stores is one of my favorite pastimes. There is something about the perfectly lined shelves stocked bountifully with unique ingredients and specialty cookware that leaves me in a state of rosy bliss. While visiting New York in October we stopped into Soho's Dean & Deluca for a moment and it was unequivocally the most charming and graceful specialty store I've been to yet. As promised before entering, my trip was limited to that of a "window shopping" nature, but I can imagine a pretty penny would be spent well there. Here are a few pics I snapped while inside:

DIY: Candy Cane Wreath

Nothing makes my heart pitter-patter more with excitement and joy than a holiday themed DIY. This candy cane wreath, filled to the max with folded fabric squares, was no exception. While it required a good two hours of cutting and pinning, the end result far exceeded my expectations for all things homemade.

Click below for step-by-step instructions.

You'll need:
Styrofoam wreath
350 ball point pins
1 1/2 yards white fabric
3/4 yard red fabric
1/2 yard muslin
scissors
ruler

1. Start by cutting your muslin into long, 5-inch wide strips and wrap it around wreath until covered completely. Secure with pin or drop of glue.
2. Measure and cut both colors into 3-inch squares.
3. Fold each square twice over and secure with pin onto wreath. I filled in one red row, followed by 2 white rows. Repeat until wreath is full. (This takes a while. I suggest a good holiday movie to keep you happy while pinning).
4. Add a bow or looped ribbon for hanging.

Currently Loving: Glitzy Flats

As much as I'm obsessed with high heels, I rarely wear them. While they're a joy to look at and I covet the ones I have, I find myself praying to the fashion gods for relief after an hour of wearing them, which is why I find myself most days on the complete opposite end of the shoe spectrum: flats. They're comfortable, easy to slip on, and don't require a plethora of band-aids to save my feet. Because flats are understated in comparison to heels, I love pairs adorned with sequins, covered in prints, embellished with jewels, and any other component of pizazz that will bring the shoe to life. Holiday Gift DIY: Homemade Vanilla

Giving or receiving a homemade holiday gift truly makes this time of year most memorable. Whether it's a simple card made from scrap paper, or something a little more elaborate, a gift made with love will surely be treasured by the recipient long after the season ends. Thanksgiving Table Settings + Place Setting Diagram

One of the things I love most about the holidays is decorating the table. While I'm not a fan of over-the-top fancy place settings, I do find it quite fun to celebrate the day with nice plates, silverware, and glasses. As for the accessories, I like to keep the centerpieces, place cards, and scattered decor rather simple, allowing the food to be the center of attention. Hair Love

Usually, a small portion of my weekend is reserved for trying new things with my hair and makeup since time for mistakes and re-do's is abundant. I'm thinking of trying these two looks today or tomorrow: a messy, updated version of the oh-so-classic topsy turvy ponytail, and a front braided updo. Both are simple and won't require me to heat up my curling iron; a win-win in my book.

Office Organization

If there is one thing I crave during the holidays (besides all of the yummy food), it's organization. While this time of year is by far my favorite, I can't help but be overwhelmed with the furniture out of it's normal order, storage bins constantly being moved around, and the endless amounts of decorations being sorted through. For this reason, I'm always looking online for storage and organization ideas, which is how I came across these perfectly coordinated and composed offices that I wouldn't mind emulating. DIY Chocolate Cups + Vegan Hot Chocolate Recipe

I love nothing more than a cup of hot chocolate at night this time of year. Below is my favorite recipe, which is gluten free and vegan.

1/4 C. cocoa powder (I use Ah!laska)

3/4 C. sugar

pinch of salt

1/3 C. boiling water

4 C. coconut milk (I use SoDelicious)

3/4 tsp. vanilla extract

Mix cocoa powder, sugar and salt in a small saucepan. Add in boiling water and coconut milk. Stir in vanilla extract. Top with whipped cream (gluten free and vegan whipped cream recipe here)

Peek Inside a Stylist's Home

Curiosity about others and whether or not they live their life according to what they preach (or in this case, do) plagues my mind quite often. For instance, when I'm at the dentist, I wonder if he too flosses, avoids candy, and brushes religiously. Or, if my doctor takes her own advice and sticks to her 'one glass of wine a day, thrice weekly cardio sessions' schpeel. Similarly, I often wonder what the homes of stylists and designers look like. Do they save their fanciest design tricks for themselves, creating an at-home masterpiece, or does conjuring up endless ideas for clients leave them worn out and in turn, their houses are simple and void of much flair? For this reason I love taking a peek inside designer's homes, like this one owned by stylist Jennifer Jansch, who has designed each room to be equally as fabulous as that of her portfolio.

A House Filled with Flea Market Finds

I didn't become a fan of flea markets until after I moved to Los Angeles. Between the Melrose Trading Post, Rose Bowl Flea Market, and a few others held around the city, it's hard not to see the charm and opportunity flea markets present. While browsing the outdoor aisles, I can't help but notice that everything for sale seems to be only a short DIY step away from becoming a better version of what it once was, which in turns fills my mind with this grandiose vision of me spending afternoons refurbishing said items and putting them somewhere in my home with the satisfaction of knowing I saved money and recycled. But alas, my dream stops there, as more times than not I walk away empty handed for fear of ending up with a house filled with odds + ends that don't make any sense. However, after seeing this home, which is mostly filled with flea market finds, I'm certain I need to step up my game and make a purchase (or two) the next time I'm there.

Dream Kitchens: Part Deux

Out of all the rooms in my house, the kitchen is by far the most used. Whether it's for a quick snack or a marathon cooking fest, I can never seem to stay away for more than a few hours at a time. Since I spend so much time in there, I often find myself dreaming about building a kitchen exactly to my liking, which is somewhat fun and helps the time pass when doing the more mundane tasks (ahem, dishes). DIY: Branch Candle Votives

After seeing this tutorial on Fossil's website, I've suddenly become obsessed with gathering relatively decent looking sticks/branches to make a few of these candle votives on my own. Since our front/backyard is somewhat void of such materials, I've been on the lookout for them during our morning walks, which has been semi-successful. I think I may need to make a trip to Griffith Park to complete my stick collection for this DIY. One way or another, I will complete this before season's end. It's too cute and simple not to try.

The weather is finally holding steady at fall-like temperatures in Los Angeles, so I took a few minutes yesterday to switch out the bedding from summer quilts to down comforters, duvets, and knit blankets. In the master bedroom I have my favorite bedding of all time, Pottery Barn's Katherine duvet, and in the guest bedroom I have a more gender neutral but equally as lovely duvet, Jayden Stripe (it looks like PB is sold out but the Mathieu Stripe is similar). Gossip Girl by Romeo + Juliet Couture

Gossip Girl has been a part of my Monday night routine since the day it premiered (seriously, I don't go anywhere on Monday's at 8pm when it airs unless it's an emergency!) so I was ecstatic seeing this collection. Navy Blue

There are very few colors as classic and timeless as navy blue. Whether it's a cozy old sweater, a piece of shiny silk ribbon, or even a tote canvas bag, anything doused in the color instantly exudes a level of sophistication that other colors don't quite capture. As much as I love all things navy, I must admit it's never been on my radar for wall paint color like shown in these photos. While it's bold and risky, I don't think these rooms could have turned out any better. Now, if I only I had such courage to go through with navy blue painted walls...

Fried Banana Bites - Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free Desserts

During our adventurous day in NYC last weekend I was frequently stopped in my tracks by the deliciously intoxicating smells of freshly made desserts omitted from bakeries and food carts alike. Since being gluten free means staying away from such yumminess while out, I decided to recreate a few of the treats I saw once I got home, the first being fried banana bites. A sweet blend of rice flour, coconut milk, egg, raw sugar, and coconut shreds, these bites are simple to make and perfect topped with powdered or cinnamon sugar. Just be careful...they have a tendency to disappear at an alarming rate.

You'll need:

5 Tbs. white rice flour
1 Tbs. sugar
2 Tbs. shredded coconut
1 egg, beaten
1/4 C. milk (of any kind- I used coconut)
2 bananas, cut into 1/2-inch rounds
Oil for frying (I used canola)

Fill a shallow frying pan with about 1 inch oil and heat over medium until warm.
Meanwhile, in a small bowl mix together flour, sugar, coconut, egg and milk until fully incorporated and cake batter like.
Roll cut banana rounds in batter and drop into oil until golden (about 1 minute each side).
Remove from pan and place on paper towel to drain.
Repeat with remaining rounds.
Sprinkle with powdered or cinnamon sugar and serve warm.

Last Thursday we headed to New York City for the BlogHer Writing Conference by Penguin Books and it was an awesome trip, to say the least. I met so many amazing bloggers, including Megan from Greeting from Texas! and Amie from The Healthy Apple and Easy Eats, just to name a few. Saturday was our only free day, so K and I decided to hit the beautiful, fall lined streets of NYC hard and explored our hearts out. We took an early morning stroll in Central Park; stopped by Rockefeller Center to see a few minutes of the Today Show LIVE from Studio 1A; walked the High Line through Chelsea and the Meatpacking District; browsed Dean & Deluca, Scholastic Books, TopShop, Kate's Paperie, and Kate Spade in SoHo; munched on gluten free treats from Tu-Lu's Bakery in the East Village; visited the 9/11 Memorial and parts of the financial district; and, finally, ended the day on the Upper East Side by taking a peek at Sonja Morgan's (from Real Housewives of New York) 4-story townhouse. Needless to say, my subway jitters quickly faded and by the end of the day my worn-out Metro Card made me feel like a New 'Yawk' pro. Here are a few snap shots of the trip:

Sachin + Babi Collection Preview at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills

This morning I attended a preview event at Neiman Marcus for Sachin + Babi's upcoming collections and it was so much fun. The fabulous pr team at Neiman's greeted visitors on the third floor and then we were able to look at the clothes, pull the looks from the racks, and talk with Babi about her newest pieces. The collection boasts glistening sequins, beautiful hues of navy, creams, and a few vibrant colors, and can easily be taken from day to night with a quick swap of shoes, jacket and accessories. I asked Babi where she derives inspiration for new designs and she explained that it comes from a variety of places: books, movies, travels, hobbies, and everything in between. A few of my favorite pieces among the racks were the Gracie Combo Coat, Margo Leather Accent Pencil Skirt, the Marilyn Combo Dress (seen on model below left), and the Silk Chiffon Sequin dress (seen on model below right) just to name a few.

Babi looked stunning. She was is in Sachin + Babi's Sequined Fleece Sweater and the Margot Leather Pencil Skirt. Oh, and she had the cutest shoes on! Wish I had a pic of those.

Celebrity Hair: Parted Down the Middle

This is not the most thought provoking post, but since I'm the kind of girl whose day is determined by how well my part and bangs are cooperating, I thought I'd take a moment to discuss the hairstyle I envy (yes- envy) the most. You see, I've tried wearing the middle part on numerous occasions, and it just doesn't work for me. Maybe it's the shape of my head...my face...who knows. Halloween DIY: Glitter Pumpkins

On Saturday we made our way to the Tapia Bros. pumpkin patch here in Los Angeles and it was the perfect way to officially kick off fall. Upon entering we were pleasantly greeted by chickens, a rooster, sheep, goats, and even a cow; an unexpected yet somehow fitting addition during our trek through rows of pumpkins galore. We settled on three-15 pound beauties for our front porch and a handful of pint-sized ones to adorn our mantel and entryway table. I added a bit of sparkle to two of the smaller pumpkins with the help of Mod Podge (my number one go-to glue for all things DIY) and Martha Stewart glitter.

you'll need: pumpkins - glitter - Mod Podge - paint brush. optional: embellishments and ribbon. also helpful: craft paper/newspaper to work on - paper plate/bowl for mixture. one: mix equal parts glue + glitter. once mixed, add in a few drops more of glue and mix thoroughly. two: paint mixture onto clean pumpkin surface. let dry (about 2 hrs). repeat if necessary once completely dry. add embellishments. three - (alternate version): paint only glue onto clean pumpkin. sprinkle thoroughly with glitter. let dry (about 1 hr). add embellishments.

Color Palettes for Fall

Los Angeles fell into the groove of fall yesterday and it was glorious. We experienced enough rain to constitute a morning accompanied by an umbrella and a pair of rain boots -- a small but happy fete in my eternal search for distinguishable seasons in the land that seems to forget such. I wore a chunky knit sweater all day, and when I returned home there was a rather large pumpkin sitting on our front porch, compliments of the neighborhood realtor. Fall is seemingly here to stay, and this makes me happy.

Ellen Degeneres' Beverly Hills House in Architectural Digest

After I caught a few glimpses of Ellen Degeneres' Beverly Hills house during her Today Show interview yesterday, I immediately began an all out Google search for more photos. Ellen has impeccable taste, with a decor palette ranging from 18th century French worktables to Spanish Colonial benches, and so much more. The house was designed by architects Buff & Hensman and decorated by interior designer Melinda Ritz.

Pumpkin Pie Spice Whoopie Pies - Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free

I've been dreaming about indulging in a whoopie pie since the day I was diagnosed with gluten, dairy, and soy allergies. Prior to my diagnosis I'd only ever had a whoopie pie once in my life, yet for some reason, as I sat in my doctor's office listening to her tell me all the foods I should avoid, it was the thought of never having another whoopie pie that left me most distraught. The mind goes to bizarre places, I tell you. Luckily I found this pan at Williams-Sonoma and was able to successfully recreate a gluten free whoopie pie strikingly similar to the original. I added in one half tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice to the recipe for no other reason than it's officially fall, and it was marvelous. Self restraint is in full force this morning, as these lovelies are sitting on my counter...

Pumpkin Spice Whoopie Pies
1 1/2 C. all-purpose gluten free flour
1 C. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 Tbs. pumpkin pie spice (I found this at Trader Joes)
2 eggs, room temp
1/4 C. canola oil
1/2 C. coconut milk (or any of choice)

Preheat oven to 350 F.
In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and pumpkin spice.
In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, oil, and milk. Add into dry ingredients. Mix just until fully incorporated.
If you have a whoopie pie pan, fill each round until 3/4 full (about 1 Tbs.) Otherwise, on a parchment lined baking sheet, spread out about 1 Tbs. mixture to form pies - 2-3 inches apart.
Bake for 15 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. Let sit for 2 minutes on pan, then transfer to wire rack to cool.

Using your favorite frosting (click here for my homemade vegan vanilla frosting), spread about 1/2 Tbs. on bottom side up of each pie, and top with another. Makes about 8 pies.

Closet Essential: Nude Heels

While I tend not to discriminate amongst any type of shoe, I do find that a nude heel seems to be the best choice for me in terms of everyday wear. They're perfectly inconspicuous yet pronounced, appropriate in most environments, and outrageously versatile when it comes to complimenting the look of an outfit. I recently needed a new pair of nude pumps for an event, and with little time and a strict budget, I ran into Target and found the Mossimo pair (number 9) below. So far I've worn them with a printed pencil skirt, black slacks, and dark denim jeans, and have yet to be disappointed. Here are a few other nude heels I'm loving, priced from high to low.

Celebrity Homes: Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's Malibu Estate

There aren't many things that excite me more than a sneak peak inside a celebrity's home. Call me crazy, sad, or whatever you may, but I find the whole they're-just-like-us-yet-they're-not-like-us-at-all paradox fascinating. After seeing Will Smith's Malibu home in Architectural Digest, I was once again completely enamored. With it's vast, rustic design and stylish, organic-feeling flair, the home gives off a Moroccan meets Downtown vibe that I cannot seem to get enough of. It's eclectic yet successful blend of style was produced by designer Stephen Samuelson, who did a beautiful job making the home feel just as intimate and inviting as it does grand.

DIY Headboard Ideas

From home makeover shows to decor magazines and design blogs, creating a unique headboard seems to be all the craze. Hart of Dixie Fashion Event - Rachel Bilson & costume designer Meredith Pollack talk fashion

Last night a few LA bloggers and myself attended an event at Warner Bros. studios which introduced the fashion and accessories that will be seen on Rachel Bilson and Jaime King's new show, Hart of Dixie, premiering Monday, Sept. 26th on the CW. The event was a small gathering and took place on a sound stage used to film the show's bar scenes, which I thought was really cool. The set was decked out with racks of gorgeous clothes, jewelry, shoes, and handbags on either end; one side was the wardrobe of city-girl Zoe (Rachel), and the other side of country girl Lemon's (Jaime). The night began with Hart of Dixie's costume designer, Meredith Pollack, and Rachel sitting down for a Q&A session, where they discussed everything from the meaning behind the wardrobes to where Rachel personally likes to shop. Here are a few fun tidbits I took away from the Q&A:

- Meredith gathers clothes and accessories for the actors from a variety of places, including vintage shops in LA, like Polka Dot & Moonbeams, as well as mainstream stores like J.Crew.
- Since Rachel spends most of her time on set filming, she is a huge fan of online shopping. Net-A-Porter and Piperlime are among her favorites.
- Meredith likes to mix both high and low -end pieces, and shops for deals on sites like Gilt Group.
- Rachel is similar to her character Zoe in terms of style, although she does like to mix in vintage pieces to her everyday wear, like long long dresses and sweaters.
- Rachel mentioned she just bought a ton of chunky sweaters online for fall, as she loves layering clothes this time of year.
-Towards the end Rachel reversed the Q&A and asked all of us if we had bought anything from the Missoni for Target collection last week. She said out of everything, she really wanted one of the Missoni pieces of luggage, which surprised me!

The stars were out in full force tonight at the 2011 Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, wearing the likes of Donna Karan, Pucci, and Armani Prive, among many other gorgeous designers. If I had to sum up the red carpet in one word it would be...RED! Lea Michele, Nina Dobev, Kate Winslet, and Sofia Vergara were all stunning in the hue, as were many others. Overall it seemed to be a more conservative carpet this year; everyone was polished and none of the dresses were really outrageous or over-the-top.

Intriguing Color - Styling Your Space with Kelly Green

Few colors intrigue me the way kelly green does. It's bold, luminous, and yet strangely inviting as it adds elements of warmth and sophistication when used as decor. I often see it used beautifully in rooms when I flip through home magazines, but I've never given it too much thought because it can be quite an intimidating color as well. After coming across a few of these photos, I realize that the key to using kelly green is to do so minimally, whether it be a single piece of furniture like the dresser above, or a couple of lamp bases like in the living room below. The color is stunning in even the smallest of doses, so I'm guessing sensory overload might become an issue if not used sparingly (this coming from the girl who had purple walls with sparkles for 5 years growing up! live and learn, right?). Favorite Nail Polish Colors for Fall

My addiction towards nail polish and all of it's stunning hues has been growing for quite some time. While a manicure from a salon is certainly nice, I rarely make my way into one, opting instead to do my nails myself. This, in part, is due to the fact that I like changing up my polish rather frequently. I am constantly swapping out colors to compliment certain tops, dresses, and on rare occasion, a completely random color altogether. As fall officially kicks off tomorrow, I've pulled out my favorite gray nail polishes that instantly get me excited for the cooler months ahead.

Missoni for Target Collection In Stores Today

Orchestrated and handcrafted specially by the God's of powerhouse collaboration themselves - the Missoni for Target collection is now upon us and readily available in stores and online. OK...it's not that big of a deal, but it's kind of a big deal, if you know what I mean. With all the mid-to-late summer buzz about Missoni for Target opening this fall, I thought I'd refrain from posting until now, you know, in case ~~I decide~~ you decide to go today and need a checklist, or something along those lines. While Missoni is undoubtedly synonymous with gorgeous fashion, I must admit that I'm really in love with the home decor and accessories they've created for Target. Gluten Free Banana Bread Recipe- Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Nut Free Bread

I've been spending a lot of time in the kitchen lately, practicing new-to-me gluten free bread recipes in preparation for fall and winter. It may sound silly to "practice" such a thing, but I love homemade breads in the colder months and since gluten free baking is a bit trickier, I like to have a few trial runs down before serving anything to friends and family during the holidays. This gluten/dairy/soy -free banana bread recipe is from Silvana Nardone's new book, Cooking for Isaiah (excellent recipe book for allergy sufferers*), and it is delicious. After taking a bite, I literally sat in awe for a few moments, not believing I could actually eat a dessert bread like this again without fear of becoming sick. I may or may not have had a piece or two in lieu of lunch yesterday...

1 1/2 cups gluten free all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder (I used Rumford because it's aluminum/gluten -free )
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
3 ripe bananas, mashed
2 eggs, room temperature
1 cup sugar (or agave/sugar sub would work)
1/2 cup canola oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or 1 scraped vanilla bean)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Gently whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon in large bowl.
In a separate bowl, mash bananas and add in eggs, sugar, oil, and vanilla. Mix well.
Pour wet ingredients into dry, and mix just enough until incorporated. Be careful to not over mix! Gluten free flours do best just barely incorporated, otherwise the final product will be spongy.
Pour into a parchent lined or greased bread loaf pan.
Cook 45 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean.

When I first started teaching myself how to cook, adjectives like comfortable, enjoyable, and confident would have been the last words I used to describe my time in the kitchen. Fast forward a few years and I can say without a doubt that not only do I enjoy being in the kitchen and cooking, but I am comfortable; a feeling in which I doubted would ever come as I would try, and many times fail at, new dishes. While I still have a ways to go in the confidence department, my time spent in the kitchen everyday has become invaluable, as it's the one place where I can slow down, think, focus, and create. With a code name GG - short for The Great Gatsby - coined by Moss herself, the 1920s inspired affair was dreamy and elegant, to say the least. Held at St. Peter’s Church in the Cotswold village of Southrop, the decadent ceremony and reception was attended by the likes of Stella McCartney, Kelly Osbourne, Jude Law, and fellow model Naomi Campbell, just to name a few.

5 Staples for Easy Entertaining

While spur-of-the-moment visits from family, friends, or neighbors can be fun and exciting, they can also be equally as stressful when you're suddenly left scrambling, trying your best to play double duty as joyful attendee and hostess extraordinaire. Here are 5 simple staples to keep on hand to assist you when any spontaneous visits come about.

A simple appetizer: assorted nuts. Keep a bag or two of assorted nuts in the back of your pantry. Place them in a festive bowl, add a few shakes of sea salt, and voila. Simple, pretty, and your guests will enjoy them just as much as any fancy tray of appetizers.

A bit of bubbly: sparkling water. Depending on who your visitors are and what time of day it is, a glass of wine or a cocktail might not be appropriate. While your guests will be just as appreciative with a glass of ice water, it's always nice to have a little something sparkly on hand like Pellegrino or mineral water. Add in a squeeze of lemon, orange, or lime for some extra pizazz.

A little glow: tealight candles. Lighting a few unscented (to assure all guests are comfortable) tealight candles can immediately add warmth and charm to your gathering. Tealights are great year-round, and can be quickly dressed up by placing them in a mason jar or small votive.

A few laughs: a game to play. Games tend to be overlooked when entertaining, but they can be a great way to get everyone talking and involved. Whether it's a box of trivia cards to keep the conversation flowing, or it's your favorite go-to board game to liven up dull moments, having a game or two in your storage closet readily available will surely result in a good time had by all. Suggestion: Apples-to-Apples

Good tunes: a guest-friendly playlist (or CD). Adding music to your get-together will immediately energize the room and may be just the thing to keep your guests entertained the entire time. Create a playlist on your iTunes with a variety of genres to appease all tastes, or use genre specific CD's like Putumayo's French Cafe or Italia.

Toasted Coconut Marshamallows - Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free

As these last few weeks of summer quickly approach, I'm feverishly working my way through a list of seasonal recipes that won't be of much use come fall's new produce selection. While these toasted coconut marshmallows can certainly be made any time of year, my intention was to pair them with chocolate and graham crackers for the ultimate summer-associated dessert: s'mores. Sadly, I've yet to find gluten free graham crackers without soy, so my allergy free, s'more eating dream came to an abrupt halt. However, these marshmallows are so delicious on their own that they truly don't need to be roasted in the slightest, nor paired with chocolate (although a little piece of such never hurts).

the key players: I loved that this recipe only called for vanilla, gelatin, honey, water, and a pinch of salt.

A Guide to Hanging Curtain Panels - Choosing Your Curtain Style, How to Measure for Curtains, and more

I had always thought hanging curtain panels would be a daunting task, that is, until I actually took the time do so and figured out they were much easier than I ever imagined. Not only do they transform a room instantly, but they're a rather inexpensive way to spruce up the designated area without going over your budget. Here is a quick guide on how to choose your look, measure for the amount of curtains needed, and hanging your curtain panels.

Step 1. Choose your style. Narrow down your search by deciding upon the color, pattern, and fabric before heading to the store to avoid being overwhelmed with the infinite amount of choices. For modern spaces you may want to choose bolder colors or patterns, while traditional spaces may call for subdue hues and fabrics like burlap or satin.

Step 2. Determine the function of your curtains. Will your curtains be for decorative purposes only, or will they be functional curtains in order to keep things like sun light out and enforce privacy? Knowing the function of your curtains will help you determine the amount of panels you will need in the following steps.

Step 3. Measure window and determine width of rod. Now that you've decided on style and function, the next step is to measure your window in order to calculate the amount of panels you'll need. Measure the width of your window and add 2 to 4 inches to each side to determine the length of your rod.

Step 4. Calculating the amount of panels needed (width). For functional curtains, calculate 2 to 3 times the width of your window and use that number to determine the amount of panels needed. For decorative curtains, determine amount of panels based on desired fullness.

Step 5. Calculating the length of each panel (height). Depending on your liking, place the rod anywhere from 2 to 4 inches above your window frame and measure the length from rod to floor. The higher the rod is placed, the more height will be added to your room. Standard curtains fall roughly 1/2 to 1 inch off the ground for dust purposes. Anything shorter will have look out of sorts (think high-water jeans). For a dramatic look, you can allow the curtains to "pool" by adding 6" to 10" to the length.

Quick tips:
-Rods should extend outward 2 to 4 inches on each side of the window and upward 2 to 4 (or as high 8"+) above the top of window frame
-Measure the width of the window and calculate it by 1 to 3 times to determine amount of panels needed, depending on function and desired fullness
- Standard panel curtain length stops roughly an inch above the ground; pooled curtains extend 6" to 10"

If there is one thing I'm slightly obsessed with, it's beauty products. I could spend hours on the internet researching product reviews, skin care tips, new brands...the list goes on and on. My skin care and make up routine is fairly simple, mostly due to my ultra sensitive skin which cannot tolerate any products containing wheat, dairy, and/or soy.
